Rock of Oreb

Where the Midianite leader Oreb was killed

Rock of Oreb

In the context of the Book of Mormon, the Rock of Oreb is mentioned as a historic site symbolizing deliverance. It is cited once in the text, when the prophet Isaiah’s words are quoted by Nephi to describe the destruction of the Assyrian army and how God would deliver the Israelites in a manner comparable to the biblical account of Midian’s defeat. “And the Lord of Hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and as his rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt” (2 Nephi 20:26). Although not described as a location within the narrative of the Book of Mormon, the reference to the Rock of Oreb alludes to an event from the Old Testament where the Midianite prince Oreb was killed (Judges 7:25). This instance in the Book of Mormon serves as a metaphor for divine intervention and justice rather than an actual geographical description.
