City of Josh

City destroyed at the crucifixion

City of Josh

The city of Josh was one of the locations in the Promised Land mentioned in the narrative of the Book of Mormon that faced severe judgment at the time of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. As recorded in the text, the city and its inhabitants were destroyed by fire due to their iniquity and rejection of the prophets. This destruction took place as part of a series of catastrophic events that befell many cities and populations as signified by the voice of Christ declaring the reasons for these calamities. The city of Josh, along with others like the cities of Laman, Gad, and Kishkumen, was specifically mentioned to have been burned with fire as a direct consequence of the people’s wickedness and their violence against the sent prophets, culminating in their actions of casting out and stoning the messengers of God (3 Nephi 9:10). The obliteration of the city of Josh was both a literal and symbolic act, meant to cleanse the land of its bloodshed and silence the testimony against its former residents, whose actions had invited divine retribution.
