The servants of King Lamoni were tasked with the care of the king’s flocks, an important responsibility in the kingdom. One day, as they were tending to the animals near the water, a group of marauders scattered the flocks. Fearing for their lives, the servants began to murmur among themselves, expressing their deep concern that King Lamoni would slay them as he had done with others whose flocks had been lost (Alma 17:28). Their fear led to an expression of distress as they wept over the situation.
Their anxiety was alleviated when Ammon, a Nephite missionary serving in Lamoni’s territory, encouraged them to act swiftly to gather the dispersed flocks. Embracing Ammon’s plan, the servants, alongside him, moved quickly and efficiently to head off the scattered animals. Together, they successfully regrouped the flocks and returned them to the place of water, thus averting the king’s wrath and ensuring their safety (Alma 17:32). The servants’ initial fear turned to relief and admiration for Ammon, whose wisdom and leadership had saved them from imminent danger.
