Helaman, the firstborn son of Alma the Younger, was an influential figure in the Nephite society, serving both as a spiritual leader and a military commander. Tasked with immense responsibilities by his father, Helaman was the caretaker of the sacred Nephite records, the plates of brass, the twenty-four Jaredite plates, the interpreters (Urim and Thummim), and the Liahona (Alma 37:1-2, 21, 24, 38-41). These artifacts had been passed down for generations and were essential to the spiritual and historical legacy of the Nephite people.
In his role as a religious leader, Helaman was noted for his zealous efforts in preaching the gospel and baptizing many unto repentance. He was instrumental in maintaining the order of the Church during times of external conflict and internal dissension (Alma 45:22-23, 48:19-20, 49:30). His appointment as high priest over the Church is mentioned alongside his significant contributions to the spiritual well-being of the Nephite people (Alma 46:6).
When the Nephite nation faced the threat of war, Helaman showed great prowess as a military commander. He is perhaps best known for leading a group of 2,060 young warriors, famously termed the “stripling warriors,” who fought valiantly for the liberty of their people (Alma 53:19, 56:9). This group, comprised of the sons of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies, stunningly never suffered a single casualty in battle, which was attributed to their faith and the profound influence of their mothers’ teachings (Alma 56:47-56).
Demonstrating both strategic acumen and spiritual determination, Helaman was involved in numerous successful military campaigns, leading his troops with the kind of faith and valor that inspired his soldiers and other Nephite leaders (Alma 57:1-4, 56:20-23, 28, 58:1-28). His correspondences with Captain Moroni highlight his commitment and the mutual respect between these great leaders of the Nephite nation.
After the wars, Helaman continued his dedicated service by returning to his ministerial duties, effectuating a regulation in the Church and bringing many souls to repentance through his powerful teachings (Alma 62:44-46). Helaman’s life is an example of unwavering faith in the face of adversity, and his legacy includes not only his military feats but also the spiritual revival he fostered among his people. His death, which occurred in 57 B.C., marked the end of an era of profound leadership (Alma 62:52). Helaman’s influence extended beyond his life, as his sons would follow in his footsteps, continuing the sacred record-keeping and leadership among the Nephites.
