When did using water in place of wine become the general practice of the Church?

Thomas R. Valletta

“The Lord revealed to Joseph Smith that ‘it mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory—remembering unto the Father my body which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins [D&C 27:2] … .

“It took a number of years before the congregations of the Saints totally abolished the use of wine in the sacrament, but by the end of President Brigham Young’s administration, the use of water for the sacrament was generally the practice” (Haight, “Remembering the Savior’s Atonement,” 11).
