Jesus says that when a person rejects the gospel it would be better if he had never been born. At least the decision to accept or reject the gospel would still be in the future. Once he has rejected the gospel and permanently abandoned the opportunity to change his mind, the door is closed.
Mormon is still very curious about the three Nephites and so he asked the Lord to tell him more about them. In the next five verses Mormon records what the Lord told him.
