“They Departed and Took Their Swords, Spears, Bows, Arrows and Their Slings”

Brant Gardner

Mormon seems to give the missionaries the benefit of the doubt in their weaponry. While spears, bows, and slings are reasonable ways of killing animals, a sword is unlikely to be used in food acquisition. These king’s sons are leaving for their mission bearing standard Nephite weapons. Ammon and his brothers would certainly need to hunt food, but it is quite likely that they foresaw a realistic need to protect themselves in the hostile lands they were about to enter.
