Here the 1953 RLDS edition replaced towards with toward. This change was undoubtedly unintended since nowhere else did that edition replace towards with toward. As discussed under 1 Nephi 5:22, the critical text will follow in each case the earliest textual sources in determining the form of toward(s). In most instances, the earliest sources support towards, as here in Mosiah 29:40.
