The checks and balances of the higher judges correcting or sustaining the lower judges (v. 28), and a small number of lower judges correcting or sustaining a higher judge (v. 29) is also a part of the U. S. Constitution. The systems of appeals and sustaining or overruling decisions is used at all judicial levels.
In the Book of Mormon, the system of government was given by King Mosiah, son of Benjamin. He received these governing principles by revelation. The people being responsible for their sins and iniquities also suggests that the people were given a voice in sustaining or rejecting the king’s commandments. Their casting of votes and rejoicing in their liberty (vv. 37–39) supports this suggestion. The concept of accountability and magnifying of one’s office was discussed earlier (see Jacob 1:19 in chapter 1).
