This verse emphasizes those who substitute human learning for the Spirit’s wisdom. Nephi is continuing this theme from his discussion in chapter 27 of the learned/ unlearned conflict. Not only will a specific learned man be unable to read the book but the entire society will be filled with “the learned” who are wise in the ways of the world. Because of these ways and because the doctrines of men have been grafted onto the scriptures, contention over interpretation erupts. Without true authority, these learned must try to persuade through debate and other manifestations of “learning.”
