“If Ye Were Holy I Would Speak Unto You of Holiness”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

The word of the Lord and the blessings of heaven come according to spiritual readiness. God is merciful and kind as well as wise he does not give that for which we are either unworthy or ill prepared. God grants that which we are ready to receive.

To those who have stripped themselves of jealousies and fears and have humbled themselves before him, those who have an eye single to the divine glory, he grants the privilege of seeing his face (see D&C 67:10-11; D&C 88:67-68; D&C 93:1).

To those who continue to wrestle with priorities, those who attempt to keep one foot in Zion and one in Babylon, he speaks (through his appointed messengers) of sin and its consequences (see Jacob 3:12). When the people of God are holy, the Lord speaks of holy and sacred matters. When they are sinful, he speaks of the awfulness of sin and the necessity of repentance.
