“A Lake of Fire and Brimstone”

King Benjamin taught that if a man does not repent in this life “the demands of divine justice do awaken his immortal soul to a lively sense of his own guilt, which doth cause him to shrink from the presence of the Lord, and doth fill his breast with guilt, and pain, and anguish, which is like an unquenchable fire, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever” (Mosiah 2:38, cf. Mosiah 3:27; Alma 12:17).

With the exception of the sons of perdition, all men will come forth in the resurrection to a kingdom of glory. All except those , “vessels of wrath” will pay the uttermost farthing in hell and be delivered through the resurrection. Hell, or “outer darkness” (Alma 40:13), has limits and duration—at least for those who qualify for the telestial kingdom.

The Lord frequently utilizes terms such as endless torment or eternal damnation, phrases which are “more express than other scriptures, that it might work upon the hearts of the children of men” (D&C 19:7). For all but the sons of perdition, hell comes to an end at the time of the resurrection of the unjust.
