“They Are Living Souls”
Jacob here provided a strict definition of the soul (spirit and body united), one consistent with that given in a modern revelation: “And the spirit and the body are the soul of man” (D&C 88:15). In virtually every other instance the scriptures speak of the soul of man as equated with the spirit (see, for example, 1 Nephi 15:35; Mosiah 14:10; Alma 36:15; Alma 40:7, 11-14, 18, 21, 23; D&C 63:4; D&C 101:37; Abraham 3:23).
