Literature: Jacob extends his analysis by extending his imagery. When body and spirit are both released from their respective deaths, they become something new. First paradise “delivers up” the spirit, then the grave “delivers” the body. Jacob arranges the dual theme as a structural element that hinges on “deliver up.” Here, the spirit and body are “delivered up” so they can be reunited. Jacob also reprises his earlier characterization of resurrection as the corruptible putting on the incorruptible. The reversal is complete. That which was together on earth but separated through death is reunited in heaven.
Jacob’s mention of “perfect knowledge” introduces his next theme, the judgment.
