“I Have Put My Words in Thy Mouth”

Brant Gardner

Israel’s God reminds Israel of their covenant relationship. Yahweh, as the powerful patron, has already acted for Israel’s true salvation. That salvation will come through the covenant Yahweh has made with Israel. Yahweh uses imagery of planting to evoke a plan that may appear to be dormant (under the earth) yet is germinating and will rise to a mature plant. He places “words in thy mouth” and “covers” Israel. The seed of his gospel is given in the covenant. The “planting” becomes explicit, but Yahweh is not planting literal seeds, He is planting “the heavens and… the foundations of the earth.” The covenant is Yahweh’s word to Israel, and that word was so powerful that it created both heaven and earth. Yahweh concludes by the firm reiteration of the covenant from his perspective: “Thou art my people.”
