Jacob is about to deliver an address on the present and the future, and begins by quoting a section of the Prophet Isaiah, commencing with chapt. 49:22. The Prophet Mormon (8:23) exhorts the people to, "Search the prophecies of Isaiah." His name signifies, "The Salvation of God," and he has been called the evangelical prophet, because his chief theme is the advent of the Savior, the first and second, his character and work, and the extension of his kingdom. He is, moreover, worth studying for the real excellency of his style, which is simple, clear, elegant and dignified.
