“Its Numbers Were Few”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

“For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14; compare Matthew 20:16; D&C 95:5; 121;34, 40). The reason some fall rather than rise is clear: “Because their hearts are set so much upon the things of this world, and aspire to the honors of men, that they do not learn this one lesson—That the rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven, and that the powers of heaven cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness” (D&C 121:35–36). That applies within the priesthood of God as well as on the human stage of endeavor in general. Those who attach themselves to this church cannot control the powers of heaven or fulfill in any measure the commission to help bring about the immortality and eternal life of man (see Moses 1:39).
