Why did Lehi say he had already obtained the land of promise while he was yet in the wilderness?

Thomas R. Valletta

“We see in the book of Ether intimations that this very special prophet might have been translated, but we never do learn what actually happened to him. The silence concerning his circumstance is not unlike the disappearance of Alma the Younger, of which it was written, ‘And when Alma had done this he departed out of the land of Zarahemla, … And it came to pass that he was never heard of more; as to his death or burial we know not of” (Maxwell, “Three Jaredites,” 9).

Moroni, after abridging the record of the Jaredites, which is known as the book of Ether, wrote his own book. This last Book of Mormon prophet described some of the Savior’s teachings and commandments during His visit to the Nephites, which include the doctrine of receiving the Holy Ghost, priesthood ordinations, sacrament prayers, and baptism. In many ways, the book of Moroni acted as a blueprint for Joseph Smith on how to establish the true Church of Jesus Christ. Many of the doctrines and principles set forth in Moroni’s own book were the source for Doctrine and Covenants 20. Moroni’s last remarks exemplify charity toward his enemies, the Lamanites. Even as they seek his life, he still mercifully writes to their descendants in love and compassion. The book of Moroni also contains a promise to anyone who sincerely reads the Book of Mormon that God will reveal the truth of the work through the power of the Holy Ghost. He then concludes with a powerful witness of Jesus Christ.
